Chartbeat’s Recommendation Engine Chrome Extension offers content recommendations that can be used in various parts of your product to drive deeper engagement and optimize for your core KPIs. With the Recommendations Chrome Extension, you’ll have curated content recommendations based on the current page which is calling the extension. The Chrome extension not only helps visualize API results but also allows teams to manually curate links for embedding in content or other areas of the product.

Main Metrics
You can sort recommendations by the following metrics:
Similarity: When ranking on similarity, the Chartbeat recommendation engine takes into account both content similarity and engagement metrics. For instance, even if an article is similar to the target article, it may be deprioritized if it has very low engagement data.
Concurrents: The total number of people on your site at any given moment, as measured by the number of browsing sessions that have loaded a page with Chartbeat code. Note that this number includes both active (people who have recently engaged with the page and/or have it in view) and idle (people with the tab in the background/minimized and/or haven't engaged in two hours) concurrents.
Pageviews: The total number of pages viewed for the given site, section, or author.
Engaged Pageviews or Quality Pageviews: Pageviews that received at least 15 seconds of engaged time. It is indicated both in total Quality Pageviews and as a percentage of all pageviews.
Total Engaged Time: The total time in seconds visitors are spending actively interacting with your content, including scrolls, clicks, mouse movements, touch events, and keystrokes. We track reader activity every second and report engagement stats back to our servers every 15 seconds through the Chartbeat JS that is deployed when our code loads.
Avg. Engaged Time: Avg Engaged Time is equal to Total Engaged Minutes divided by Pageviews.
Uniques: The total number of unique users that have visited a page, group of pages, or site.
Weighted Avg. Engaged Time: The adjusted average engaged time is calculated as the weighted mean of a page’s actual average engaged time and the average engaged time across all pages in the filtered set.
You can base the recommendations on:
Top Trending Pages: Highlights your highest traffic and most engaging stories. The list is sorted by total concurrents on each page.
Category of the Page: We extract metadata from the text of a piece of content through natural language processing techniques to assign up to three categories to an article using IPTC taxonomy:
- Sport
- Education
- Health
- Weather
- Environment
- Religion and belief
- Arts, culture, entertainment, and media
- Disaster, accident, and emergency incident
- Crime, law, and justice
- Politics
- Economy, business and finance
- Science and technology
- Conflict, war and peace
- Lifestyle and leisure
- Labor
- Human interest
- Society
Section of the Page: Sections of pages are defined in your Chartbeat integration. Pass us section tags to help categorize your article and landing pages.
