What does Journeys show?
Within an article's detail view in the Unified Dashboard, the Next Pages module shows the links readers clicked from that article, split into Internal links (pages on your site) and External links (pages off your site, such as affiliate or partner links). You can sort by Clicks, CTR, or Link Position, and filter by Page Variant.
Do I need to add anything to my site to use Journeys?
No. Journeys works with your existing Chartbeat tracking code. The only optional addition is the pageVariantId variable, which enables the Page Variant filter. See https://docs.chartbeat.com/cbp/tracking/standard-websites/configuration-variables#page-variant.
Is Journeys a paid add-on?
No. Journeys is a standard feature of the Unified Dashboard and is available to all users on all accounts.
How is CTR calculated?
CTR is the number of clicks on a link divided by the number of pageviews of the source page (the article whose detail view you are looking at) during the selected time range. Because readers can click more than one link on a page, the CTRs of all links on a page can add up to more than 100%.
What is Link Position and why does it sometimes look wrong?
Link Position is an estimate of how far down the page a link sits, based on the position of the clicks we observe. It is an approximation, not a measurement of the page layout, so it can be inaccurate for pages or links with very few clicks. It becomes more reliable as traffic increases.
Why do I see no click data for an article?
The most common reasons are:
- The article has very little traffic in the selected time range, so there are few or no clicks to show.
- The selected time range is too narrow. Try widening the date range.
- Readers viewed the article but did not click any links.
If the article has meaningful traffic and you still see no data, contact support@chartbeat.com with the article URL and time range.
Why don't my External click counts match my affiliate network's numbers?
Chartbeat measures the click on your page, at the moment the reader clicks. Affiliate networks typically count landings or attributed conversions on their side, after redirects, ad blockers, and attribution windows have taken effect. Some gap between the two is expected. Treat Chartbeat's numbers as real-time, on-page behavior and your affiliate network's numbers as attributed outcomes.
What does "Default" mean in the Page Variant filter?
"Default" groups all pageviews and clicks from pages where no pageVariantId was set. If you have not implemented Page Variant, all of your data will appear under Default.
Can I filter by Page Variant if I send more than one variant per page?
No. pageVariantId accepts a single value per pageview. If you need to describe a page with multiple attributes, combine them into one string (for example, intl-loggedin).
How is Journeys different from the Heads Up Display?
The Heads Up Display is a browser overlay that shows click activity on a live page while you are on your site. Journeys brings link-click data into the Unified Dashboard itself, at the article level, with sorting, filtering, and historical date ranges, and without loading your site.
Does Journeys work for native apps or AMP pages?
Not at this time. Journeys currently covers pages tracked by our standard JavaScript tag.
Can I see Previous Pages (where readers came from) or a site-wide view?
Not yet! Journeys currently shows Next Pages at the article level. Referrer data for an article is still available in the article detail view.
